Flat belts are belts that are used in pulley systems and have a flat surface, usually with uniform texture on both sides. Historically, flat belts are often used to transfer power from the flywheel to other parts of the machine. Nowadays, flat belts are often used as parts of conveyor belts or belt arrays. Its flat surface makes the product easy to move along the top of the belt. Many companies design Machines for this type of belt, and sell replacement belts and belt parts made of various materials.

Leather is one of the original materials used for belt construction. Nowadays, nylon and other tough synthetic fibers are commonly used because they can be retained for a longer period of time. Rubber, metal and other materials may be involved in the construction of flat belts, some of which will be reinforced with particularly strong materials to address concerns about structural integrity. When a flat belt is used as part of a gearbox, sometimes the belt is twisted to form a Mobius belt, so it will wear out evenly during use, thereby extending the time between two replacements.

In the conveyor belt construction, the flat belt can be used as a wide belt on an assembly line or as part of a mesh belt array. When the belt is rotated by the pulley, anything on the belt will be pulled to move it to a new position. It can be seen on the web printing machine that the belt can be used to support various components in the manufacturing and assembly process. When the pulley is dry, the belt can fix the paper and move the product along the production line.

This type of belt is usually easy to replace, although the production line does need to be shut down when removing the old belt and installing a new belt. It is also usually recommended to stop the belt for belt inspection to reduce the risk of inspector injury and allow people to inspect the entire belt in detail without worrying about missing parts. Standardized sizes are common, allowing people to use interchangeable products in repairs and replacements.

Each flat belt comes with a grade that provides information about the recommended use. Generally, the weight of the belt cannot exceed its rated value because the belt may be damaged. On high-speed assembly lines, failures may damage equipment or cause serious injury to workers on the production line. It is also necessary to check the belt for cracks, wear and other signs of stress, so that the belt can be replaced in time.
